“Pride of South Tamil Nadu -2009” Award to Aravind Eye Care System

In continuation of various motivational programmes to create awareness among students, Velammal Educational Trust, Chennai instituted an award: “Pride of South Tamil Nadu” this year on reaching its Silver jubilee year. It would be awarded every year to achievers who rendered great service to the society in different walks of life. “Aravind Eye Care System”, Madurai was awarded on 22nd November, 2009 in a grand Award distribution function at Velammal College of Engineering and Technology, Madurai.

Shri. M.M.Rajendran, former Governor, Orissa presented the award to Dr.P.Namperumal Samy, Chairman, Aravind Eye Care System, Madurai.
Shri. N.Murali, Managing Director, The Hindu, Chennai presided over the function,
Shri K.Srikkanth, Chairman, selection Committee, Indian Cricket team offered felicitation in the presence of Shri. M.V.Muthuramalingam, Chairman and Shri.M.V.M.Velmurugan , CEO, Velammal Educational Trust. The award carried a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh and a Citation.

“Aravind Eye Care System” was chosen for this award for rendering splendid service in quality eye care to the economically backward rural people. Every year about 25 lakh Out-patients were treated and 2.8 lakh cataract surgeries were carried out by the group of Aravind Eye Care Hospitals in Madurai, Theni, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore and Pondicherry. The significant element of the service was that the hospital offers free treatment to 70% of its patients.

The college Chairman welcomed the gathering and the CEO delivered vote of thanks. Under the guidance of Dr. N. Suresh Kumar, Principal, Dr. C.Selvaraj, the Director/MBA and programme coordinator, made arrangements for the grand success of the programme.
