Right from the first year, students spend most of their time in state-of-art laboratories. The final year students take up projects to develop their skills in premier areas like Power Electronics, PLC Based Systems, Robotics, Bio-Medical Engineering, VLSI Embedded Systems, Computer­aided Power System Controls, Fuzzy Logic and Neural Networks. Guest lectures by eminent academicians and stalwarts in this dynamic field are organized to motivate the students.

With an intention to provide in-depth knowledge in a specific area, projects works are assigned to the students. The students have benefited from live projects and assignments. The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of oldest departments at Velammal. A study of Mechanical Engineering at Velammal helps the student imbibe sound knowledge in modern methods of design, production, analysis, quality control, optimization and management of resources, This course develops the knowledge and skills in the areas of general mechanical engineering including industrial engineering, Production engineering, thermal and management sciences, functional areas of management, information systems, computer integrated manufacturing apart from the basic engineering knowledge and skills. Through the state of the art CAD/CAM facility, students are also exposed to the latest design, analysis and simulation software. The faculty is well qualified, experienced and the members are high profiled who impart high quality teaching. This branch of engineering produces engineers who can serve in manufacturing, service and research organizations including defence. After Successful completion of study, these engineers can take up higher studies in specialized areas such as Machine Design, Machine Tool Design, Thermal Engineering, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning, Production Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Management.
